Friend groups shift. School gets harder. Social expectations become more complicated. Kids become increasingly aware of how others see them, while still trying to figure out how they see themselves.

A small disagreement can suddenly feel enormous. A difficult day at school may follow them home through group chats, social media, or the fear of what everyone will think tomorrow.

And when adults ask, “What’s wrong?”, sometimes the most honest answer is simply: “I don’t know.”

Middle Ground is a six-week therapy group for middle school students navigating anxiety, changing friendships, academic pressure, self-esteem challenges, and the increasingly complicated social world of the preteen and early teen years.

Inside the group

A place to feel understood, and to learn what to do

One of the most valuable things a young person can discover is: “I’m not the only one who feels this way.”

The group gives middle schoolers a supportive space to talk honestly with peers experiencing similar pressures, while also learning practical skills for handling those pressures more effectively.

Participants will work on

  • Recognizing anxiety before it becomes overwhelming
  • Managing academic and social stress
  • Coping with overthinking and worry
  • Navigating changing friendships and peer dynamics
  • Responding to social pressure with greater confidence
  • Strengthening self-esteem
  • Understanding and expressing difficult emotions
  • Practical strategies for calming the body and mind
  • Building resilience after setbacks or uncomfortable social moments

The goal is not simply to help kids feel less anxious for six weeks. It is to give them a toolkit they carry into the classroom, friendships, family life, and adolescence.

Is this your kid?

Who this group is for

Middle Ground may be a good fit for students who:

  • Worry frequently about friendships or what others think
  • Feel anxious before school, presentations, tests, or social situations
  • Experience friendship drama or trouble finding where they belong
  • Compare themselves heavily to peers
  • Struggle with confidence or self-esteem
  • Overthink conversations and replay them afterward
  • Become overwhelmed by academic expectations
  • Have a hard time talking openly about what they are experiencing
  • Could use the relief of learning other kids feel the same way

For parents, this group offers something that is hard to create at home alone: a structured, clinically guided peer environment where your child learns from a therapist and from realizing they are not the only one.
