Clinical Nutrition Counseling

Food and mental health are deeply connected. When we aren’t eating enough or consistently, the brain becomes under-fueled making it harder to focus, regulate emotions, or benefit from therapy or medication. Whether you’re navigating an eating disorder, struggling with ADHD-related eating patterns, or seeking to rebuild a healthy relationship with food, nutrition counseling offers compassionate support that addresses the full picture of your well-being.

How Clinical Nutrition Counseling Can Help

Our bodies and minds are intricately linked. Poor or inconsistent eating habits can worsen symptoms of anxiety, depression, irritability, and attention struggles. In some cases, it can even reduce the effectiveness of medications. You can be doing all the right things but without proper nourishment you may fall short of functioning at your best. With clinical nutrition counseling, you or your child/teen will receive personalized support to better nourish the body and stabilize the mind.

Areas of Support Include:

What to Expect

Sessions are collaborative and client centered. I work with you (or your child/teen) to build sustainable, shame-free habits around eating, while exploring the emotional, behavioral, and even spiritual layers of your relationship with food. I often coordinate care with therapists to create a holistic and unified plan for healing. No strict meal plans—just support in building confidence, nourishment, and peace with food.

Each session is tailored to the individual’s needs. For example, a teen with ADHD might work on creating simple, balanced routines around meals and snacks to support focus and mood—while a client with a history of disordered eating may explore hunger cues, food flexibility, and emotional regulation without restriction or fear.

Together, we’ll build a supportive foundation that allows your brain and body to thrive—because when we nourish ourselves well, everything else works better.

Sanjit Mandal Pleasanton, California

I was seeking a therapist, counselor, psychologist (not sure you call them to be honest, they just help) 🙂 around the Pleasanton/Dublin and I wanted to make sure they were patient, listening, showing empathy and compassion. Dr. Yen did just that. My family was having some challenging family dynamics and he was able to main my high regard and setup the next steps towards a thriving family.

Toni M. Dublin

Dr. Yen has been the primary clinician working with my son. Through his transparency and honesty my son and I have developed a trusting bond. Dr. Yen possess a unique ability to connect with individuals on their level. His approach to therapy made him a perfect fit for my son and I. As a parent it was helpful that he possessed the ability to highlight both the desires of my son and myself. Dr. Yen helped us find peace and helped us to rebuild a damaged relationship. I recommend Dr. Yen to all who seek support, guidance, and understanding of all relationships in life.

I have nothing but great things to say about having Tim as my therapist. As a female, I was hesitant to work with a male psychologist but I'm glad that I took the chance to do so. Tim is unlike any therapist I have worked with. He is more relatable and someone who is easy to talk to. He has a more outgoing personality and doesn't just listen. Having a therapist who just listens works well when needed, but I was looking for someone who would push me to think differently and challenge me to make changes and grow as a person. Tim gave me homework and always had ideas on how I could try to change or look at things differently. He has great insight, is kind and is organized in terms of scheduling, email responses, sending superbills etc. I recommend Tim to those looking to make a positive change in their lives. Thanks Tim!

Dr. Yen is wise, intuitive, insightful, and compassionate beyond words. As an elementary school teacher, I am faced with a myriad of challenges regarding children behavior and psychology. Dr. Yen has been a "go to" doctor for council and wisdom as I navigated children's behaviors in a classroom setting. When parents ask for references, I refer them to Dr. Yen, because I know they will be well taken care of emotionally, spiritually, mentally, psychologically, and physically.

I had a lifesaving experience with Tim. We met so many different counselors before for my son but none of them was working but he treated my son like a brother with great counselling, and he got so much better within a year. Now he has stopped taking depression medicine and almost back to normal life. If you have a child with depression, I highly recommend him.

Nutrition counseling is a process where a registered dietitian helps you or your child understand and improve your relationship with food. It’s not about strict diets or quick fixes—instead, we explore habits, emotions, and physical needs to support long-term health, healing, and sustainable confidence in eating.
Nutrition counseling may be helpful if you or your child are struggling with disordered eating, inconsistent eating patterns, poor appetite, body image concerns, or nutrition-related symptoms that affect mood, focus, or energy. Often, families have tried everything from tutoring to therapy – then notice real change when their child beings eating more consistently. Better nourishment often means better focus, behavior and academic performance. If eating feels confusing, stressful, or out of balance, nutrition counseling can provide clarity and support.
Sessions are personalized and client centered. We’ll talk about your goals, eating patterns, medical or emotional concerns, and daily life. You’ll receive education, practical tools, and compassionate support—without judgment or pressure. For kids and teens, sessions are tailored developmentally with sustainability in mind and often involve parent collaboration.
Nutrition counseling supports both physical and mental health. It can help improve energy, mood, attention, and eating consistency while reducing food-related stress and guilt. For children and teens, it can build positive habits early and support emotional resilience. Many clients feel more at peace with food and their bodies after working together and some even notice improved academic performance. Having a well-nourished brain can truly be life changing!
